Unit 3 CONTEXT

Brief : research, investigate, and write 1000 words on a chosen object.

Walking down the road one morning near my house i ducked into the Whitechapel Gallery to shelter from the rain. That was the moment i laid eyes on the life-size tapestry of Pablo Picasso's Guernica. It was the first thing that came to mind when briefed to undergo an in-depth investigation of a chosen object.

I highlighted six details in the painting and used each one to symbolise a different theme, so my essay is made up of six parts. Mimicking the large scale of the original painting while keeping the piece portable was important, and to achieve this i used folding panels which gave me more surface area to fill. This format requires interaction from the reader and hopefully engages them more with the story, and the jagged edges of the covering collage were a happy accident that also serve to symbolise the violence and conflict at the heart of Picasso's masterpiece.
